Nonfiction Monday: Two Bobbies

Larson, Kirby and Mary Nethery. 2008. Two Bobbies: A True Story of Hurricane Katrina, Friendship, and Survival.

A sweet picture book based on a true story featuring a cat and dog. A book all about friendship and surviving against all the odds? How could I resist?

Here is how it begins,

The city of New Orleans, on the mighty Mississippi, is a place many people and pets call home. Jamming with jazz and dressing up fancy for Mardi Gras, it bustled with life day and night.
But on August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina bore down on the city and everyone who lived there, including a wisp of a cat and one puppy.

The artwork by Jean Cassels is wonderful. Realistic and masterfully done. The text is direct. The story simply speaks for itself through words and illustrations. The reader learns that Bobbi and Bob Cat were abandoned pets. No one knows who their owners were. No one knows what their names had been. No one even knows if these two had been friends before the hurricane. So while many things remain unknown, a few things are undeniable.

Anyway, I won't go into all the details. But this one is definitely recommended.

I just wish I hadn't visited the site. Really. Sniffle, sniffle. If you want a happy ending, read the book and leave it at that. The book trailer, on the other hand, is safe.
